What is the difference between a custom and tailored suit?

by The Compendium on Mar 18, 2024

A bespoke suit, crafted in Holland and Sherry Royal MileYou might have seen these 2 phrases being thrown at you day post after post in your targeted ads, and so you've taken to the internet to find out what exactly is the difference between a custom and tailored suit?

While some people can say:" The key difference between custom suits and tailored suits is the construction and customizability of the garment, with custom suits being designed exclusively, and the pattern cut from scratch, while Tailored suits, on the other hand, are made using existing patterns. "

We will not.

The two terms here are marketing jargons which are overused and hold no real meaning in the context of determining the value or type of suit that the establishment can provide. These terms give you no true insight into what you are actually getting

A custom suit just means that you can customize details on the suit to make it more unique to you. A tailored suit means that it has been through the hands of a tailor. By separating the two terms, does that mean then that the custom suit is not tailored to you? Or perhaps the suit which is tailor made for you cannot be customized?

Of course not.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with using these terms, we are wary of them complicating the already dizzying world of menswear and adding to the confusion of the general public. So we've made a list of things you should be searching for instead:

The terms you should be typing in your search bar instead, are: RTW (ready to wear), MTO (Made to order), MTM (Made to measure), and Bespoke.

But for the sake of your convenience, we explain these terms, here:
